The materials used are of the best quality, finest horsehair for the mane and tail, superb leather for the saddle and bridle , and of course selected timbers for the horse and stand. Construction is of solid timber carved and sanded to fine detail. Because each horse is hand carved no two are exactly alike, each has a definate personality of its own. A small cavity is left in the middle of the body and is often used as a time capsule by clients wishing to leave mementos for a future generation. The finishing process is traditional and completely non-toxic. After final sanding seven coats of gesso are applied and rubbed down to a porcelain like finish. Gesso has been used since pre-renaissance times as a method of preparing wooden surfaces for painting. If I am not mistaken the Mona Lisa is painted on a gessoed wood panel. In the final painting I do depart from tradition and use high quality modern paints which are lead free. Millhaven Creek Rocking Horses are available in any colouring you desire, with European or Western style Saddle. A brass plaque engraved with the name of the recipient and the date made is standard, as is a certificate of authenticity stating that the horse was made by me for you. The photographs will give you some idea of the care, quality and craftsmanship that goes into the making of every Millhaven Creek Rocking Horse. |
